Does Your Pet Sitting Service Use Employees or Independent Contractors?

Does your pet sitting service use employees or independent contractors

Does your pet sitting service use employees or independent contractors? Does it matter? Yes, it does. The saying goes that ignorance is bliss but, in truth, what you don’t know could hurt you!

Why It Makes a Difference if Your Pet Sitting Service Uses Employees or Contractors

A great percentage of pet sitting companies use independent contractors rather than employees to do the pet sitting or dog walking visits in your home. What is the problem with this? Well, if the independent contractor does not have worker’s comp and he hurts himself on your property while taking care of your pet, you could be left to foot the bill for the injury.

Won’t health insurance cover a contractor who gets hurt? It might. However, insurance being insurance, the procedure is to ask where the person got hurt and what he/she was doing. When the insurance finds out that the person got hurt while working, they may no longer wish to cover the injury. What does that mean for you? More than likely you will have to go through your homeowner’s insurance policy to cover the injury. That will increase your insurance as well as give you a lot of needless aggravation.

Well, doesn’t your pet sitting company say that it is insured and bonded? You should be OK, right? Wrong! If they are using independent contractors, their liability insurance will cover any damage to the home and to the pets, but it will NOT cover injury to the pet sitter. This is something that worker’s comp covers. With independent contractors, each contractor is responsible for insuring him or herself and most do not. So, again, you could be left footing the bill. Check Your Pet Sitting Service Before Your Hire

So, next time you are looking for a pet sitting company, or if you already have one but aren’t sure if they use employees, be sure to check. Ask your pet sitting company what will happen if a sitter is injured in your home. Are they covered? Do they have worker’s comp? The answer is crucial! The cheaper rate you pay for the service could end up being very expensive in the long run.
